Local theaters to host new and old titles throughout October

Several local theaters are excited to ring in the season with Halloween themed movies during the month of October. The Mirror spoke with Moxie Cinema, the Historic Gillioz Theatre, and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema about their plans for the Halloween season.

Moxie Cinema

Moxie Cinema is thrilled to give movie-goers a nontraditional experience at the movies. They pride themselves on being a unique theater.

“We exist to enrich our community through film’s power to engage, educate, and inspire. Our community engagement is distinctive when it comes to other local theaters,” explained Shay Cele Rainey, Marketing Director of Moxie Cinema.

“As a nonprofit, we’re able to show unique movies and host free screenings and events; all while staying below industry prices on tickets and concessions,” she continued.

Moxie Cinema is excited to offer a wide variety of Halloween themed movies this year. They are eager to offer a free screening of the 1982 classic, “Poltergeist” at 8 p.m. on Oct. 11.

This is part of a partnership with the Greene County Library’s, “Oh, the Horror” series. Their Halloween lineup also includes an independent film called “Straight Edge Kegger” and the Nicolas Cage cult hit “Mandy” (2018), for those who missed it in theaters.

Historic Gillioz Theatre

While Moxie Cinema broadens their showings the Historic Gillioz Theatre sticks to their annual showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween. Geoff Steele, Executive Director of the Historic Gillioz Theatre is excited about what the Historic Gillioz Theatre has to offer.

“The historic theatre contributes to the patron experience in a different way than the newer box cinemas,” explained Steele. “We also augment the experience with costume contests, themed raffle prizes and drink specials that augment the film experience.”

Special experiences to the Halloween holiday are common among the theaters. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is eager to offer a variety of screenings over the course of October.

Alamo Drafthouse

“Our guests particularly enjoy horror in all of its genres, so we have responded this year with over 50 specialty programming options throughout the month,” explained Jennifer Johnmeyer, Creative Manager for Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is offering new and old titles for the season. They are set to host their annual Dismember the Alamo event Sat., Oct.26. This event is a four-movie marathon; tickets come with a “swag bag” and a special 30-minute pre-show. They also have a special guest at the event.

“We’ll also have a tattoo artist on hand to do horror-themed specialty tattoos on a two-tier pricing system of $20 and $40. Our theme this year is Horror Eating, and that’s as much as guests will know until they get into the theater and we announce the individual titles,” explained Johnmeyer.

While Alamo Drafthouse Cinema may cater to the extreme Halloween lover Moxie Cinema, the Historic Gillioz Theatre each offer a variety of experiences of movie-goers.
