The Oscars Best and Worst Fashion Moments

After a limited red carpet last year due to COVID restrictions, this year’s Oscars red carpet was more or less ‘normal,’ and your favorite celebrities did not disappoint. Many celebs chose far more casual styles than the normal glitz and glam that the red carpet is known for and I’m here for it.  Let’s take a look at the best and worst fashion of the 2022 Oscars red carpet.

Best Dressed:

Zendaya

It’s probably no surprise to anyone that Zendaya is first on the list of best dressed. In her Valentino gown, Zendaya combined the traditional elegance of the red carpet in her sparkly skirt with the more popular casual style predominant in this year’s red carpet with the cropped top.  I think Zendaya combined these two elements flawlessly and was one of the best dressed of the night.

Timothee Chalamet

Dune star Timothee Chalamet also makes the best dressed list with the same combination of glam and casual.  Taking a note from co-star Zendya, Chalamet combines the traditional glamorous look of the red carpet in his embroidered Louis Vuitton blazer and black pants, but makes it feel more casual by not pairing it with a shirt underneath. I’m obsessed with this look and think this style suits him very well.

Simu Liu

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu killed it in his Versace suit.  Liu doesn’t break the mold for red carpet looks like Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet but his red suit is still one of my favorite looks of the night.  I think this look is perfect for this first Oscars red carpet.

Kristen Stewart

Spencer star Kristen Stewart surprised everyone by wearing Chanel shorts to the red carpet.  This look might be controversial to put on the best dressed list, as it might seem almost too casual after seeing Zendaya and Chalamet combine glam into their casual looks. Stewart’s look doesn’t do this, but in my opinion her look perfectly reflects her personal style, which has also leaned more to the casual side, making her one of the best dressed of the night.

Worst Dressed

Nicole Kidman

The Keeping up with the Ricardos star and Best Actress nominee Nicole Kidman walked the red carpet in an Armani gown.  Personally, Kidman’s dress was not my favorite–I thought the color kind of washed her out, I didn’t care for the train or the poof in the middle.  All and all I think each part of this dress could have worked but separately  not together on one dress.  The business of it made the dress look like it was wearing her instead of her wearing it.

Maggie Gyllenhaal

Adding Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Schiaparelli gown to the worst dressed list may be controversial, but I think this dress also seems a little too busy.  I like the shape of the dress and actually think that the wide shoulders looks good on her.  I do not like the gold hardware, however; it draws the eye away from her face and once again makes the dress look like it is wearing her.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish’s Gucci dress fits perfectly in line with the style she is most known for–oversized and loose fitting clothes.  However, most recently we’ve seen Eilish branching out with her looks and I was disappointed to see her fall back into her ‘safety’ style. While I do think Eilish does a good job of wearing the dress, instead of it wearing her, this dress reminds me of a potato sack that someone added ruffles to.

Renate Reinsve

Renate Reinsve’s Louis Vuitton gown caught my eye because it tries to capture the glam/casual vibe that Zendaya’s look accomplished, but it just doesn’t work in the same way. There’s a lot going on and that distracts from the aspects of the dress that make it ‘glam’ making it feel far too causal to be a red carpet look.
